Ken Hugh has joined Conax as a Regional Sales Manager, acting as an extension of customers’ engineering teams to determine the best and most economical solutions to their individual thermal and sealing requirements in the Northeast United States.
Ken brings 35 years of automation instrumentation and process control experience to Conax. During that time, he saw the industry evolve from the analog to digital world and now into global control and interface.
He has worked in a wide range of markets and industries, including military, medical, oil and gas, power, aerospace, and industrial heating, just to name a few. “I’m looking forward to applying a dynamic range of thermal and sealing solutions to customers’ challenging process applications,” says Ken.

Conax would like to welcome Chris Jank as its newest Sales Application Engineer. He’ll be providing customized solutions to customers’ challenges in the Western region of the United States.
A mechanical engineering graduate from the University at Buffalo, Chris previously worked at a leading global sensor company where he held positions in application engineering, field sales engineering, and territory management.
He was introduced to many industries including industrial, power generation, aerospace and defense, and general testing markets. “These combined roles gave me experience meeting with customers and providing technical and sales support to help solve their unique sensor and product needs—an asset for my role at Conax,” says Chris.

Over the last few years, many mid-sized manufacturing companies in Western New York have been absorbed by larger manufacturing competitors. Niagara Blower, Curtis Screw, Jiffy-tite, and Niagara Thermal have each succumbed to large corporate buyouts, tempted by pledges of building upon existing operations in Western New York.
Conax could be categorized as a mid-size company and has been wooed by potential buyers, but not one to fall victim to trends, acquisition is not in owner Robert Fox’s plans. In a recent Business First article, he stated, “You have to decide who you want to be when you grow up. We want to be a market leader.”
In the article, Bob Fox went on to point out that market leaders require a growth strategy. With that in mind, Conax’s growth strategy is supported by recent initiatives, including:
- Opening sales offices in Shanghai and California, with the potential for another in the United Arab Emirates
- Hiring a new chief operating officer with extensive leadership experience in the power industry
- Investing in new machinery

Various petrochemical plants had to conform to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation Subpart Ja for added temperature monitoring of the Flare Stack for sulfur emissions monitoring. This required several plants to hot-tap a new branch nozzle into the flare stack to provide a means for inserting the temperature sensor through a process isolation valve without interrupting production.
Conax’s RSA with a Retractable Tapered End Thermowell was designed to rigidly support the tapered end into the hot-tapped hole of the Flare Stack. It is designed to survive a flare stack event with gas velocities up to 375 ft/sec (256 miles/hr) at 50 PSIG at 850OF. The design includes a retraction nozzle with bleed port to ensure the tapered end clears the process isolation valve and allows for bleed-off of the process gas. The retractable design is made possible with the use of Conax Technologies’ Seal Fitting.

Company: A major steel company in the US.
Challenge: The customer approached Conax regarding the thermocouple they used in their coke plant compressor bearing housing. The spring-loaded device is sealed so lubricating oil would not penetrate into the thermocouple enclosure. However, oil was leaking into the enclosure and shutting the compressors down. The thermocouple manufacturer could not solve the problem, and Conax was asked to submit a new design.
Solution: After reviewing a sample thermocouple, Conax submitted a design featuring a SLANS spring-loaded mounting system with a Viton O-ring. Because a 0.250″ diameter was required to connect into the compressor bearing, and the customer wanted a 0.125″ diameter probe for faster response, a 0.25″ stainless steel support tube was added to the assembly.
Impact: Problems with oil leaking into the housing have been alleviated without impacting response time.
Challenge: Deer Park needed a source for flashback thermocouples on a Siemens Westinghouse W501F gas turbine. They currently have four turbines with plans to bring two more on line in the future. Each turbine has 16 burner cans with two sensors on each burner can for a total of 32 sensors. They schedule maintenance once or twice per year, but unscheduled outages also occur.
The sensor assemblies use Type K sensor elements, with grounded junction and 316SST sheath, and operate at 700°F. Positioning of the sensor within the burner can is critical. If the sensor tip is off position by 1/2” either direction, a massive error in temperature results. They purchased the sensors from a local distributor, but were hoping to find a lower cost alternative.
Solution: Conax provided the desired cost savings while enhancing the design, shortening the sensor length to better fit the turbine.
Impact: We actually understand their business enough to refine the design to meet their needs. Conax expertise and design capability led to a subsequent quote on disk cavity thermocouples for the same turbines.
